Patrol Officer Open Competitive Examination
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION SHOULD ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PATROL OFFICER
EXAMINATION. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be between the ages of 21 and 45 at the time of appointment, be a citizen of the United States, be of good moral character, have no criminal record, have obtained a high school diploma or GED equivalent, hold a valid Ohio Operator’s License, have a valid Cuyahoga Community College police officer agility exam certificate or a current certificate from a certified organization by the time of hire, and be mentally and physically fit to perform the duties customarily required in this position. Each applicant upon application and subsequent appointment to the Division, shall reside in Medina County or any county adjacent to Medina County. EXAMINATION INFORMATION: Applicants must pass a written, medical, physical, psychological and truth verification examination before being considered for employment.
The written examination will be given through National Testing Network (NTN) beginning April 6, 2025 through April 27, 2025. Please visit their site at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com to fill out an application and schedule a test. New subscribers will find related registration costs at this website.
You must receive a score of at least 70% in order to pass the examination. Applicants will be ranked on an eligible list according to their examination score plus any extra credit points.
The top ten candidates will be eligible to be interviewed for each opening and are subject to an extensive background investigation. Under Ohio Revised Code section 124.25, the Commission may refuse to certify as eligible for appointment an applicant … “who is addicted to the habitual use of intoxicating liquors or drugs to excess, who has a pattern of poor work habits and performance with previous employers, who has been convicted of a felony, who has been guilty of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct, who has been dismissed from either branch of the civil service for delinquency or misconduct, or who has made false statements of any material fact, or practiced, or attempted to practice, any deception or fraud in the application or examination, in establishing eligibility, or securing an appointment.” In addition, applicants convicted of domestic violence will not be eligible for appointment.
Before appointment, the candidate must take a truth verification test and undergo a physical examination by a licensed physician that has been chosen by the City of Brunswick. The physical examination will include a drug screening test. Psychological testing may also be administered, which must be completed to the satisfaction of the employer.
EXTRA CREDIT ON EXAMINATION: Those achieving a score of 70% or better on the examination will receive the following extra credit to be added to their score:
FIVE (5) POINTS: For completion of military service with proof of an Honorable Discharge (Form
DD214)
TWO (2) POINTS*: For an Associate’s College Degree
FIVE (5) POINTS*: For a Bachelor’s College Degree
*The maximum credit permitted is five points, total, for any college degree or degrees. The degree must be from an accredited college and the applicant must present a copy of the OFFICIAL COLLEGE DIPLOMA.
FIVE (5) POINTS: For completion of the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy (must present an official certificate of completion).
ONE (1) POINT: For each year of part‐time service as an accredited Officer with the City of Brunswick. The maximum credit for such service is six (6) points.
TWO (2) POINTS: For being a two‐year resident of the City of Brunswick at the time of Application.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Appointment to the position of Patrol Officer has a probationary period of one year and no appointment shall be deemed final until the appointee has satisfactorily completed his or her probationary period. If the appointee has not already completed the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy Program, he or
she will have to complete the required program at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, or similar training academy. Appointee must be able to meet the Academy entrance requirements upon appointment, or the candidate may be removed from the eligibility list. To graduate from the Academy, the appointee must pass the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Council Certification Test and the Physical Conditioning Program that is required.
CURRENT SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Starting salary is $28.94 per hour, with the four‐year rate of $41.52 per hour. The City will pay the employee’s contribution to the Ohio Police and Fire Disability and Pension Fund up to a maximum of 12.25%. Medical, prescription, dental, vision and life insurance is offered after 90 days of employment. Employees accumulate 4.6 hours of sick time for every 80 hours worked and are entitled to 2 weeks of
vacation after one year of employment, as well as 10 annual personal days off. Longevity pay is received after 4 full years of employment with the City and an annual professional pay is earned for certain accreditations and certifications.

Assistant Fire Chief
The City of Brunswick is accepting resumes for the position of full-time Assistant Chief, Division of Fire. Candidates will participate in an assessment containing 2 components:

- Scored Interview
Each component will be graded with a maximum of 100 points each, for a combined maximum score of 200 points.
The City offers a competitive benefit package including medical, prescription, dental, vision and life insurance after 90 days, as well as covering the 12.25% employee contribution to OP&F. Employees accumulate 4.6 hours of sick time for every 80 hours worked and are entitled to vacation as well as Holidays. Longevity pay is received after 4 full years of employment with the city and an annual professional pay is earned for certain accreditations and certifications. The current salary range for this position is $65,891 to $125,861.
The Assistant Fire Chief responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in assisting the planning, organizing, directing and implementing fire prevention, suppression and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and emergency medical conditions. Performs fire and emergency medical services and is the head of training, fire prevention and suppression services. Supervises staff during responses to emergency fire, medical aid, hazardous material rescue, and other situations unless relieved by a superior officer. Plans, assigns, schedules, directs, and participates in station and equipment maintenance, fire prevention inspection, paramedic services, and other assignments of the Division. Works under the general guidance and direction of the Fire Chief. Supervises all fire department staff on assigned shifts, either directly or through other subordinate officers and may act as Fire Chief during absences of the Fire Chief, as assigned. Meets with elected or appointed officials, other Fire/EMS officials, community and business representatives and the public on all aspects of the Department’s activities. Attends conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field; represents the City Fire/EMS Department in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings.
Minimum qualifications include: A State of Ohio EMS and Fire Certification with a preference for those also possessing a Fire Safety Inspector Certification. Two years of college or technical school is desired; three (3) to five (5) years of full-time supervisory or administrative experience at Lieutenant level or above; Fire Officer 2 Class; NIMS 300, 400. Candidate must be currently employed, or previously employed within the past twelve (12) months, in the Fire Service.
